Background of the Study
Nigerian oral traditions represent a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, where folktales serve as vehicles for transmitting moral values, historical narratives, and communal wisdom. Morphological processes such as affixation, reduplication, and compounding are central to the creation of these narratives, imbuing them with rhythm and emphasis that aid memorability (Chukwu, 2023). Folktales, passed down through generations, reveal complex linguistic innovations that reflect both creativity and cultural continuity. Comparative analysis of these morphological processes across different Nigerian ethnic groups provides insights into how language adapts to serve cultural functions. This study examines the word formation strategies employed in Nigerian folktales, comparing similarities and differences in morphological structures between various regions. It further explores the role of these processes in enhancing narrative effectiveness and preserving cultural identity. The research underscores the importance of documenting oral traditions, as modern influences threaten to erode traditional linguistic practices (Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although Nigerian folktales are rich in morphological complexity, systematic analysis of their word formation processes is limited. This gap in research hinders our understanding of how indigenous languages innovate to preserve cultural narratives (Chukwu, 2023). The lack of comparative studies across different ethnic groups obscures the potential variations in morphological strategies, making it challenging to develop a comprehensive picture of Nigeria’s oral traditions. Consequently, there is an urgent need to document and analyze these processes before modern influences cause irreversible changes in traditional language forms (Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To document morphological processes in Nigerian folktales.
To compare word formation strategies across ethnic groups.
To assess the impact of these processes on narrative preservation.
Research Questions
What morphological processes are prominent in Nigerian folktales?
How do these processes vary between ethnic groups?
What role do they play in preserving cultural heritage?
Significance of the Study
This study illuminates the intricate morphological processes underlying Nigerian folktales, contributing to our understanding of cultural preservation through language. The findings will support efforts to document and revitalize traditional narratives, offering valuable insights for linguists and cultural historians (Chukwu, 2023; Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the analysis of morphological processes in Nigerian folktales and does not encompass other forms of oral literature.
